Lords Cricket Trip

The England Women’s 1st XI Cricket team took on their Australian rivals at Lords in a one day international. Ratton gave 40 pupils the chance to travel and visit the home of cricket. A long coach journey ended and the beautiful sunshine beamed down on the capital as England batted first. Mrs Buckland, our resident Australian, managed to convert 90% of the travelling Ratton spectators into following the supporting the women in green and yellow. After several applications of face-paint, the chant ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie... OI! OI! OI!’ could be heard from the Ratton area of the crowd. This did however reflect on the performance by the visiting team. England were all out for a measly 168 after 48 overs.

England’s bowling looked sharp to start, but then it was inevitable that their total was too low to cause a threat. England managed to get only 2 wickets, before the tourists finished off the game with 169 after 35 overs, winning by 7 wickets.

The highlight of the day followed the match, where the pupils were invited to step onto the hallowed turf and meet the players after their presentations. The rain just managed to hold off, as pupils managed to get photos with the players and plenty of autographs! Another long journey followed through the rush hour traffic, but we managed to see some of London’s landmarks – during this time, it was difficult for Mrs Buckland to keep the smile off her face!

Year 8 6-a-side Inter Cricket Competition

The Year 8 Cricket team took the short journey to Hailsham Community College to take part in the Schools 6-a-side Inter Cricket Tournament on Wednesday 22nd June. Our first game saw a re-match of local rivals Cavendish. The batting started off slowly, but soon picked up with Jake Botting and Lewis Cole finding the boundaries. A target of 37 was set from a respectable 5 overs. The Cavendish batsmen managed to score, with several 4’s in quick succession. No wickets fell, and the opponents beat their target with 1 over remaining.

Next up, Bishop Bell. Some strong batting from Christian Hartigan-Jeremiah and Josh Jackson added to Rattons tally of 47 runs from 5 overs. Decent bowling from Garratt Weblin and Freddie Black kept Bishop Bell’s run rate down and with good fielding from the team, wickets fell and the opponents ended on a mere 23 runs.

The host Hailsham were last up in the group and after some decent shots from Khevane Byroo a reputable score was put up on the scoreboard, but Hailsham managed to plug away with the bat during their innings, ensuring that they would win the tournament with Ratton finising in a respectable 3rd position.

Ratton School Sports Finals Day 2011

On Thursday 26 May all students in school competed in the inter-community athletics ‘Sports Day’ competition.

The week before trails had been held during the students PE lessons and the top eight competitors were selected to compete in the finals during the Sports Day.

This year, not only was there a shield presented for the community with the most points, but a trophy and prizes were also awarded to the community and tutor group with the best supporting banner.

All students and staff rallied hard to produce banners of all shapes, sizes and colours. What with the banners, stomp drummers and the accompanying PA system pumping out music, it all helped to create a carnival atmosphere which spurred on the athletes in their various events.

It certainly was refreshing to see so many students taking part in the event, both on and off the athletics track. Even the staff were not exempt, as a staff relay team representing each community completed in the ‘finale’. Students cheered on staff, some of whom were dressed in fancy dress or was it the original road runner seen crossing the finishing line!!!

Luckily the rain held off throughout the competition and the final scores tallied to reveal the winning community as Lyric. Congratulations to everyone who supported the event and helped make it such a success and to the athletes who have been selected to represent Raton School at the Town Sports on Tuesday 28th June which is taking part at the Sports Park. Good luck!!

Year 9 Girls come 4th

The Ratton Girls Rounders teams have been on a roll recently and as the tournament began, it looked as if they were going to continue the success. Paige Jordan-Evans, Ellie Farrington, Georgie Potter, Amelia Inman, Carlie Vilar, Amelia Hicks, Rosalie Hide, Daisy Strong-White, Erin Smith and Leah Holden beat The Eastbourne Academy  by 6 rounders to 3. The second game was a lot closer but the girls won that by 2 and a 1/2 rounders to 2 against Lewes Priory. Seaford Head were the next challengers and in a nail biting innings, Seaford won by 4 and a 1/2 rounders to 4. This meant that the team who scored the most rounders throughout the pool stages qualified for the final. Unfortunately, Lewes Priory had scored 1/2 more than our girls, so the game for 3rd and 4th place it was to be. The girls played well but were out batted by Willingdon and lost by 7 rounders to 6.

Once again, the Ratton girls behaved perfectly, looked the smartest in the full Ratton PE kit and played in good faith. Well done girls!

Year 8 Girls just miss out on victory at the South Downs Schools Rounders Tournament

The Ratton U-13 Girls Rounders Squad consisting of Danni Hearn, Charlotte Edwards, Ryleigh Brown, Amy Godfrey, Alice Potter, Lauren Manson, Megan David, Becky Greene, Jodie Russell and Georgie West demonstrated excellent fielding skills and some outstanding batting techniques to earn their place in the final.

Having already thrashed Bishop Bell in the league, the girls took on Willingdon School and won by 6 and a 1/2 rounders to 5. Ratton then faced Hailsham Community College and scored 4 and a 1/2 rounders to HCC's 2. The last game in their pool was against Seaford Head Community College and their exceptional fielding only gave away 1 rounder to the opposition. Ratton scored 4 and a 1/2 making them winners of their pool.

Ringmer Community College were their next and last opposition. The girls fielded well against some big hitters and they went into bat needing 6 to win. Unfortunately, the Ringmer girls caught 6 balls and a valiant effort by the remaining 3 scored 3 and a 1/2.

Once again, the girls were impeccably behaved and were a credit to the school. Well done girls, we can win the league!!

Year 8 Cricket vs Hailsham

Hailsham Community College: 88-3 (12.0 overs)
Ratton School: 66-7 (12.0 overs)
HCC beat Ratton by 22 runs

The Year 8 Ratton XI looked to get their first win of the 2011 campaign at home to a strong Hailsham side. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first. Ratton bowling bowled well to start showing a boost in confidence after last week’s disappointing loss to local rivals Cavendish. It didn’t take long until HCC’s opening pairs partnership ended, as Freddie Black caught the opponents opener after a fierce Tom Hawkins ball. Ratton found it more difficult to stop HCC’s other opening batsman who ended up with a respectful score of 29 not out. Only two more wickets fell during Hailsham’s 12 over innings; both were caught and bowled by Hawkins and Hartigan-Jeremiah respectively. Hailsham finished on a total of 88-3.

Ratton were confident in hitting their target of 89, but this was soon shattered. Opener Weblin was unable to do anything with the visitors first bowlers second delivery, as it crashed into the stumps behind him. Khevane Byroo almost managed to last the whole of the innings, but was unfortunate to be run-out with a total of 12. Wickets started to fall in quick succession with Baker, Black, Myers and Hartigan-Jeremiah only scoring 6 runs between them. The target score seemed to be slipping away quickly, but Hawkins was run-out in the 11th over. Botting and ‘guest player’ Hover were left with a mammoth task to get near HCC’s 88. Some confident batting from the pair saw a partnership of 18, but this was too late. Ratton finished their 12 overs with a total of 66 runs.

A slow start to Ratton's innings made it a difficult challenge to pull off, but the Year 8 XI should be happy with their grit and determination with the bat after this game.

Year 8 XI – Garratt Weblin, Khevane Byroo, George Baker, Freddie Black, Ross Myers, Tom Hawkins, Christian Hartigan-Jeremiah, Jake Botting, James Stone, Lewis Cole, Nathan Hover.

Year 7 Girls Victorious In South Downs Rounders Tournament

The Ratton Year 7 Rounders Squad, consisting of Beth Tagg, Robyn Arno, Lauren Johnson, Megan Gates, Joanna Bruce, Ruby Hilton, Ella Hide, Sarah Holden, Lydia Redman, Chloe Page, Hannah Lindsay and Eliza Kennedy won all their games to be crowned Champions of the South Downs Schools Partnership.

In their first ever Rounders game as a squad, the girls batted well to score 5 rounders against Tideway and won 5-2. In their second game they faced Lewes Priory and some excellent fielding tactics prevented their opponents to score more than the girls' 6 and 1/2. Seaford Head were their next prey and the girls confidently won by 6 rounders to 2 and at this point, they were well on their way to the final. However, there was still one more game to play against The Eastbourne Academy. The girls racked up a fabulous 7 rounders and conceded only 1 and 1/2 which cemented their place in the final against Ringmer School.

Fortunately, the girls won the toss and chose to field first. On the first ball, Ringmer scored 1 rounder and it didn't look too promising! However, the girls fielded brilliantly, communicating with each other and nailing their catches, only allowing a 1/2 rounder more to be scored. So, that was it. Only 2 rounders to win the tournament, how hard can that be? 2 no balls gave them a 1/2 and the girls brilliantly scored another 3 to make the final score 3 and 1/2 to Ringmer's 1 and 1/2.

The girls were a credit to the school. They were gracious, played fairly and behaved impeccably. Thank you girls, it was a pleasure to watch and share your moment of glory. Many congratulations!!

Groves is ‘try’riffic’ as Ratton win against all odds

The year 8 Ratton team looked to build on their loss against HCC last week when a strong Bishop Bell team paid a visit to Park Avenue. With only the minimum 15 players in the squad, a real team effort was important to have any chance in beating the opposition who produced a try-scoring master class in the recent rugby 10’s tournament.
An early break-away from the home team gave a boost of confidence to the players, but this unfortunately didn’t last very long. Bishop Bell used their pace and perseverance to slip their way through the Ratton defence to score the first of 3 converted early tries. With the score at 0-21, it was important that the Ratton team got on the score sheet before halftime. Up stepped man of the match Tom Groves to power his way through the Bishop Bell defence and scoring between the posts. Jake Botting calmly slotted over the conversion to increase the points tally.
Complacency started to set in, and mistakes were made all over the pitch from the home team. Some lazy rucking and poor tackles made it easy for the visitors to score 3 tries in as many minutes to end the first half with the home team trailing 7-36.
With the introduction of Owen Davies in the second half, the Ratton players had more bite to their game, and were clearly determined to turn the score around. Groves managed to once again force his way through the Bishop Bell midfield to score his second try of the match, which was once again converted from the boot of Botting. The visitors responded with another try to set a mammoth task for Ratton, trailing by 29 points with only 20 minutes remaining.
Space started to appear on the wings for Ryan Button and Lewis Cole. A stray pass from the opposition was picked up by Cole who thundered forward scoring a well-deserved try in the corner. Ratton showed great determination in both attack and defence. Dani Katz, Bruce Partridge, Josh Crompton and Khevane Byroo used their strength in the scrum by driving Bishop Bell backwards and turning over possession several times. Tom Groves once again stepped up by scoring another 3 tries in quick succession, with conversions from scrum-half Freddie Black, and centre Chris Hartigan-Jeremiah. With the score at 36-41, Ratton needed a converted try in the last 2 minutes to seal a famous victory that would go down in the schools history. Garratt Weblin, Issac Goff and Owen Davies helped to recycle the ball for the home team which was followed by some remarkable play from Reece Giles, who managed to keep applying pressure on the visitors, taking hit after hit in the tackle and persevering with his mazy runs. With the time on the clock quickly disappearing, it looked like it was too late to score any more points. Once again, Tom Groves picked up the ball 10 metres from the try line and charged his way through the visitors defence to put the scores level on points. Hartigan-Jeremiah stepped up and coolly drop-kicked the conversion to put the home team 2 points clear. Only seconds were left on the clock, and after a nervous spell of defending, Ali Knell kicked the ball off the pitch sending the Ratton players into euphoria. Final score: Ratton 43 – 41 Bishop Bell.

Year 8 squad: George Baker, Bruce Partridge, Dani Katz, Owen Davies, Khevane Byroo, Tom Groves, Freddie Black, Ryan Button, Reece Giles, Chris Hartigan-Jeremiah, Jake Botting, Garratt Weblin, Issac Goff, Josh Crompton, Ali Knell, Lewis Cole.

Year 8 Rugby vs Hailsham Community College

Ratton looked hungry for tries as they started the game off with some strong powerful runs from the midfield. Some tough tackles from the defensive line made sure that the HCC players would not get on the scoresheet in the first 10 minutes. Hailsham managed to take advantage from a Ratton mistake to score the first points with a converted try. Several times Ratton looked to get over the try line, but HCC kept their defensive line strong by piling on the pressure against a determined year 8 team. Hailsham scored another 2 un-converted tries with no reply. Some strong Ratton tackles followed, allowing Tom Groves to pierce through the HCC defence, completing his 20 metre mazy run with a try between the posts. Another 2 points were added with a Freddie Black conversion. Trailing 17-7, it looked as though Ratton could fight back. Another Hailsham try before half time dented the home team’s confidence as the visitors stretched their lead with another 7 points.
Determination kicked in during the half-time team talk, but an early converted try in the second half from the visitors put the game beyond reach. The Ratton team kept on pushing, but it was clear that there was not much gas left in the tanks of the 16 player squad. HCC scored 3 more converted tries to finish the game off, resulting in a loss of 7-52 for the Ratton team.
The year 8’s look to bounce back next week when they take on Bishop Bell at Ratton on Tuesday 5th April. Please come along and show your support!

Year 8 squad: George Baker, Bruce Partridge, Ollie Braby, Owen Davies, Irvin Allymohamed, James Stone, Khevane Byroo, Tom Groves, Freddie Black, Ryan Gregory, Ryan Button, Reece Giles, Chris Hartigan-Jeremiah, Alex Carolan, Jake Botting, Garrat Weblin.

South Coast School Sports Partnership Rugby 10’s Tournaments

YEAR 7
Eastbourne Rugby Club hosted several Rugby 10-a-side tournaments last week for schools in the local area. The year 7 squad took part in their first ever full contact event and got underway against Bishop Bell by scoring an early try. The lead only lasted a matter of minutes after the opposition managed to squeeze through the Ratton back line four times, and put the game to bed. Both Seaford and Tideway put out strong sides and dominated both games against Ratton without conceding any points. The play off against local rivals Hailsham proved to be the most entertaining of the tournament. After conceding an early try, Ratton battled back and showed true courage in their play. Some excellent handling and recycling of the ball helped Ratton to pierce through the HCC defence 3 times in quick succession, finishing with a 15-10 win to end the tournament on a high.

Year 7 squad: Abdul Hammer, Bayley Grant, Hami Sadat, Joe Hacker, Paul Dyer, Zack Wolstenholme, Jamie Taylor, Toby Hills, Huw Curry, Justyn Cronin, Billy Barnard, Joe Andrews, Lewis Moulding, Hallum Cous

YEAR 8
The year 8 team started off their group with a convincing win against Peacehaven. Some strong work from the Ratton pack created plenty of chances for the backs to cross the try line and get onto the score sheet. Celebrations were cut short as local rivals HCC managed to find some gaps in the defence to win a close fought match, which was followed by a courageous performance against Cavendish who were sadly too strong to beat. Ratton qualified from their group, but were sadly sent home after losing in the quarter finals to Bishop Bell. The year 8 team look to get revenge in the next two weeks as they take on HCC on Tuesday 29th March and Bishop Bell on Tuesday 5th April. Both games are at Ratton – come and show your support!

Year 8 squad: Chris Hartigan-Jeremiah, Freddie Black, Garratt Weblin, George Baker, Khevane Byroo, Ollie Braby, Owen Davies, Tom Groves, Ross Myers, Reece Giles, Ryan Button, Bruce Partridge, Jake Botting

YEAR 9
The year 9 team also started off their day well, with a demolition of Bishop Bell with 4 tries in six minutes. Some strong running from the backs and powerful rucking from the pack outplayed Bishop Bell, with Ratton securing a 19-5 win. The team were not able to finish off as strong as they started as they were defeated by Tideway and Peacehaven in quick succession. Both games were full of grit and determination, but Ratton unfortunately could not find the gaps in either teams defence to score any more points.

Year 9 squad: Amro Hammer, Joe Williamson, Tom Wickham, Sam Deadman, Jamie Taylor, Joao Regueira, Matt Lawrence, Omer Bozdag, Connor Pearce, Chester Duff, Aiden Johnson-Bissett, Murat Koksal, Jake Nash, Luca Torrens-White, Nik Melo, Fabio Derico

YEAR 10
Cavendish took the points in the year 10’s first game with a demolition of our frustrated Ratton players. HCC then followed with a closer game, but once again it was difficult to beat their defensive line and get some well deserved points. The question ‘will we ever score a try?’ were muttered shortly afterwards... this was then answered in style, as Ratton crossed the try line 4 times in as many minutes to seal a well deserved win against Peacehaven. Hopes were now high as the Ratton players went into their final game with nothing to lose. Unfortunately, Lewes Priory finished the stronger and went away the winning team.

Year 10 squad: James Powell-Cullingford, James Weston, Victor Agostini, Thomas Thwaites, Billy Taylor, Oliver Loades, Tom Cassidy, Matt Bilton, Robbie Gough, Alex Miles, Ryan Hall, Lukas Povilonis,

Congratulations to all players that represented Ratton in the tournaments!
