Events @ Ratton School http://www.rattonschool.co.uk/ Ratton School Events Feed VCMS Eastbourne Shout - Singing on the Seafront http://www.rattonschool.co.uk/events/?eventId=195 Fri, 23 Apr 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Are you a hairbrush in front of the mirror type or do you only sing in the shower? Whether you’re Eastbournes best undiscovered talent or an “only when no one’s listening” singer, this is the opportunity for you!

Eastbournes first Big Sing will take place on April 23rd at 6.30pm on the infamous Western Lawns as part of the Eastbourne Festival. It is not about whether or not you can sing well, it’s about feeling good and being part of something big.

The aim is for as many people as possible, from all walks of life, to come together and share in singing three symbolic songs; one international song, “Babethandaza”, (better known as Sin je je je), from South Africa, a song of national importance, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”, and “I do like to be beside the seaside” for a local focus. Click here to download the lyrics and click here to download the sheet music.

Singing for the Soul, (the Science bit!)We all sing sometimes, even those of us who are painfully shy and those of us without any musical ability can catch ourselves ‘shouting’ along to our favourite songs on the radio. This is because it is good for you! Professor Graham Welch has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years. He says singing is an aerobic exercise which reduces stress levels and increases our sense of emotional well-being. “Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.”

How to get in on the ActThere are many ways to get involved. Most importantly you need to bring your friends and family, along with an umbrella to the western lawns turn up on the 23rd April. Might it might be a good idea to learn the songs in advance. ‘Drop in and sing’ sessions will soon be popping up across the town where you can just pop in and learn the songs along side others, it should only take 15 minutes! We will also release the lyrics, sheet music, and ‘you tube sing alongs’ in the next few weeks.

To make this project truly successful we need all schools, community centres, churches, cafes, retirement homes and even book clubs and Knitting circles to get involved. If you are a member of a group who could host or even run one or more drop in and sing sessions between 1st March and 23rd April please do get in touch. We will provide you with everything you need to get started and even come and run one with you!
