Modern Foreign Languages

Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum Area

We are a very successful department offering German, French or Spanish to students in year 7. All students study a language for six lessons a fortnight up to the end of year 9. Able linguists are given the opportunity to pick up a second language later on in KS3. We are introducing the Asset Languages scheme of assessment for learners of all ages and abilities, which is a life long languages recognition scheme.

We achieve very good GCSE results at KS4

The Languages Department consists of 6 members of staff:

Mrs Woods
Curriculum Manager French m.woods@ratton.e-sussex.sch.uk

Miss Dean
Curriculum Manager German c.dean@ratton.e-sussex.sch.uk

Mrs Weblin

Miss Zintl

Mrs Compton

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Christmas market trips to France and Germany,  Foreign Language exchange trips and a popular Year 7 residential trip to Boppard, Germany.

Every September we celebrate European Day of Languages – in the past we have offered taster sessions in a new foreign language, students learnt to dance the salsa, did some European cooking and food tasting amongst other things

The department has a dedicated set of laptops . Every classroom has interactive whiteboard facilities and we are committed to making our lessons as active and engaging as possible. We subscribe to several interactive language learning sites, which help students practise structures they have learnt in class.

Every student has a handbook for the language they are studying which contains all the information they need

The School has been awarded the International School Award three times and many of our classes have e-mail links with classes abroad. We believe this brings the language to life and increases motivation and enjoyment.
