Media Studies GCSE

Year 10 & 11

Autumn 1: Basic Skills and Coursework (Yr11)
Autumn 2: Assignment 1 and Practical Productions (Yr11)
Spring 1: Assignment 2 and Preparation for Controlled Test (Yr11)
Spring 2: Assignment 3 and Controlled Test (Yr11)
Summer 1: Assignment 4
Summer 2: Completion of initial coursework component. Introduction to practical production

Key Skills

Taught in term 1 of Year 10 and put into practise throughout the course:
* storyboarding
* scripting writing *programme treatments
* analysis
* deconstruction
* note taking
* reading media texts including film, TV, radio, advertising etc.

Equipment

Books needed - Any book, magazine
Text book available in class: access to TV and video recorder necessary.
Desirable: access to newspapers, magazines, cinema, cameras (stills and video if possible) radio etc.

Particular homework requirements

e.g. types of homework, length of homework
Averaging one hour per week – sometimes more: could be watching TV or film: analysing adverts, reading newspapers, searching the internet, listening to radio, audience surveys etc

Assessments, exams, deadlines

3 coursework assignments completed by the end of Term 2 (Christmas 2007)
Practical production completed by February 2008.
There are opportunities for cross curricular oral assignments in English.
Controlled Test (exam) May of 2009 quiz shows.

Ways in which parents can help
Discussing TV and film – helping provide access to newspapers / magazines etc./ talking about own TV / filmic experiences. Taking an interest in the work undertaken.
