KS4 - Textiles

Design Technology - Textiles

If chosen – students will follow the EDEXCEL Textiles Technology (1971) course in Years 10 and 11, which will lead to a full GCSE. Design and make assignments will be undertaken, to ensure understanding of fabrics and their properties, decorative and functional use of colour application techniques, functional properties and processes involved in item and garment construction, SMART materials and CAD/CAM/CIM production systems.

Students will be expected to produce a coursework assignment, which will provide 60% of their total marks; the remaining 40% being provided by an end of course written examination.

Term 1/2 - Year 10

Knowledge and understanding of fibres, yarns and fabrics

To understand that the choice of zips, buttons, Velcro, press fasteners, poppers, braid or ribbons, fusibles or linings depends on their aesthetic and functional properties and the product end-use

To understand the properties and working characteristics of textile materials and relate this to how different functional properties of fabrics affect finished products
