Gifted & Talented

What does gifted and talented mean?

GIFTED students show exceptional ability or potential in academic subjects (intuition, analysis and extending ideas). TALENTED students show high ability or potential in the expressive or creative arts or sport (teamwork, leadership and organisation).

Teachers at Ratton plan work to suit everyone’s level of ability and personalise learning because every child matters.

The gifted and talented cohort usually represents up to 5% of students on roll (currently 41 pupils in 4 or more subjects across the school). Gifted & talented students are identified in all core and foundation subjects using teacher judgements, assessment and exam results. These are recorded on a register which is updated annually.

Teachers at Ratton School plan extension activities within lessons and extra curricular enrichment opportunities for gifted and talented pupils. All students identified as gifted and talented are encouraged to make the most of these opportunities.

Enrichment opportunities may include:

• Spelling Bee
• Chess tournament
• Ratton’s Got Talent contest
• You’ve Got Talent (inter-school final)
• Trivia Challenge (general knowledge)

Extension activities include:

• Mandarin Lessons (at Moira House School)
• Maths Challenge
• Latin (at Eastbourne College)
• Early entry GCSE’s
• Art Challenge (including exhibition)
• Archaeology (G&T primary taster day)
• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) club

The provision for our most able learners continues to be excellent. I am pleased to report that in our 2010 GCSE results all of our Gifted and Talented students achieved 5 or more A* or A grades with A*- B grades in English (Language & Literature) and A*- A grades in Maths.
